Guttering is important. As a homeowner, you probably don’t think about your guttering a lot, and when you do it’s because problems have developed, and your guttering has become damaged or even dangerous. It doesn’t pay to ignore your gutters, and they are a key aspect of your home’s facade.
With this in mind, here are three steps for ensuring the quality of your gutter:
You need to check your gutters on a regular basis. Ideally, you should check your gutters at least two times a year. You should also endeavour to check your gutter after heavy weather, and especially during autumn.
You should check your gutters in autumn because they can be affected by leaf-fall, which can fill the gutters. This can block the guttering, and also make them heavier and so more likely to detach from your home’s facade. If you find your gutters are filled with leaves you should clean them, with, e.g., a trowel, but you can also use a hosepipe to wash out the guttering.
Some kinds of gutter are more susceptible to damage and other problems than others. You might consider changing your guttering for plastic guttering, such as UPVC guttering. Plastic works well because it’s very easy to install, not heavy, affordable and resistant to weather damage.
So, the three steps to better guttering are checking regularly, repairing and maintaining your gutters and replacing your guttering for more suitable modern gutters if necessary.
